Notes on Peter Simon Starcher
Peter Simon Starcher was born about 1843 in what is now Calhoun County West Virginia and died in Webster County WV in September 12, 1896, age 53. His death certificate is available AT THIS LINK, cause of death given as "dropsy." He married Sarah Wilson on October 4, 1866.
Peter Simon was a brother of Thomas Starcher, and would have been a great-uncle of Allen B. Starcher.

Adam Starcher, a son of Philip and Rebecca (Mace) Starcher, was born in Harrison County VA (WV) December 25, 1808 and died in Calhoun County WV February 8, 1881. He married Phoebe Coger August 28, 1828 in Kanawha County VA (now Calhoun County, WV). Phoebe, a daughter of Peter and Mary (McElwain) Coger, was born in Franklin County VA January 6, 1814 and died February 13, 1899.

Peter Simon Starcher, a son of Adam and Phoebe (Coger) Starcher, was born in 1843 in what is now Calhoun County WV, and died in 1896. He married Sarah Wilson in Calhoun County October 4, 1866. Sarah was born in VA in 1846 and died in 1907 (Note: This given death date in question -- see below).

married Effie Lurene Brannon October 9, 1904. Effie, a daughter of
Oliver and Dorothy Josephine (Laughlin) Brannon, was born July 2, 1882
and died January 23, 1967.

9, 1970. He married Myrtle Westfall in 1906. Myrtle, a daughter of
Thomas Warren and Laura Virginia (Hoskins) Westfall, was born in
Calhoun County December 27, 1882 and died May 9, 1984.

March 14, 1951. Mattie married Hoy Maxwell Vineyard October 17, 1969.
Hoy was born September 15, 1922.

Born Calhoun (Kanawha) Co., about 1841. Age 19 Calhoun County 1860 Census. Enlisted Williamsburg, Greenbrier Co., W.Va., 1 Mar. 1863. Not stated if present or absent on muster-in-roll dated March 1863. Employed as a laborer at Warm Springs, W.Va. 15 Jan. 1864-29 Feb. 1864. Signs by X. Captured Arnoldsburg, Calhoun County, 30 Oct. 1864. Sent to Cumberland, Maryland, then to Wheeling, W.Va., 2 Nov. 1864. Description, age 22, 5' 10", fair complexion, light hair and blue eyes. Occupation, farmer residing in Calhoun County, W.Va. Transferred to Camp Chase, 29 Nov. 1864. Confined at Camp Chase, 30 Nov. 1864, desires to take the oath of allegiance. Gave a statement at Camp Chase, 30 Jan. 1865 as being 22 years of age, a resident of Calhoun Co., W.Va. Says he enlisted June 1862 for twelve months, to avoid conscription. At the expiration of his term of enlistment, he was not permitted to go home or be discharged. He was detailed to procure horses while in the Valley of Virginia, his being disabled. He went home with the intention of deserting. Took the oath of allegiance and was released, 18 Feb. 1865, by order of the Secretary of War. Age 28, farm laborer, Lee Township, Calhoun Co., W.Va. 1870 Census. Age 38, farmer, Lee District, Calhoun County 1880 Census. Brother of Jehu and Thomas Starcher. Died near Bolair, W.Va. 12 Sep. 1896. Buried Webster Co., W.Va. C.S.A.
Apparantly after returning to Calhoun County after the war, he married Sarah Wilson on October 4, 1866.

As the death certificate note above indicates, Peter Simon Starcher died in Webster County WV September 12, 1896, death reported by son Amos Starcher. It is not known to this writer if he moved there, was visiting there, or how or why he ended up in Webster County. Of note, his brother Jacob P. Starcher was a resident of Webster County.

EUGENE STARCHER - Poca, formerly of Arnoldsburg
Eugene Starcher, 89, of Poca, West Virginia, formerly of Arnoldsburg, WV, died Thursday, October 3 at Putnam General Hospital after suffering a stroke.
Born May 7, 1913 at Arnoldsburg, he was a son of the late J.Y. and Myrtle Westfall Starcher. He lived most of his life in Arnoldsburg, until his retirement. He was involved in timbering, farming and was retired from the WV Department of Highways.
Surviving are one daughter and son in law, Sandra and Joe Lancaster of Grantsville, WV; one son and daughter in law, Joe and Phyllis Starcher of Poca; brother, Charles Knotts of Bickmore, WV; grandson and his wife, Gregory S. and Traci Lancaster, great grandsons, Kaden Scott and Jacob Lee of Elizabeth, WV; grandson and his wife, Kyle P. and Tracy Lancaster and great granddaughter, Addison Marie of Arnoldsburg; grandson, Kevin P. Lancaster of Grantsville; granddaughter and her husband, Julie Christine and Philip Garlow and great grandson, Philip Joseph of Poca; grandson and his wife, John Eugene and Pam Starcher and great grandson, Joshua Peyton of Woodlawn, Tennessee; numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Ruth Sturm Starcher; brother, Seldon Starcher and two sisters, Fay Cox and Mattie Vineyard.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, October 6 at 3 p.m. at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg. Tim Davis will officiate. Interment will be in the Sturm Cemetery at Millstone, WV. Friends may call at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.
