Notes On Mary "Polly" Starcher

The Descendants of Jacob Starcher file compiled by Don Norman lists Mary "Polly" Starcher, born 1849, married to John Bailey July 9, 1871.

It should be noted that there are two other 'Mary "Polly" Starchers' listed on this page, one the daughter of Philip Starcher b. 1817, married to John Blosser, and another the daughter of Jacob Starcher, born 1842, married to George Stallman.

No record of the death of this Mary Starcher has been found.

Evidence from which this family tree is drawn is presented below.

The 1850 Census for the Adam/Pheobe Starcher lists a daughter Polly age 4. The 1860 census lists a daughter Mary age 14.

Marriage records at the West Virginia Archive at this link document the marriage July 9, 1871 of John Baily, age 22, born in Logan WV, son of Harvey and May Baily, to Mary Starcher, age 22, born in Calhoun WV, daughter of Adam and Phebe Starcher.

Of note, there is a John W. Bailey noted in the 1870 census to be living in the household of Adam and Phoebe Starcher, age 21, farm laborer.

The 1880 Federal census for Lee District, Calhoun County WV indicates the family of John and Mary Bailey (mispelled Baley) living adjacent to the home of Adam and Phoebe Starcher.

It may be noted that, according to articles appearing in The Grantsville News from the turn of the century, it was not uncommon for young men in the Calhoun County area to go to Richwood (Nicholas County) in search of work.

A marriage record at the WV Archives at this link documents the marriage in Calhoun Co WV July 6, 1902 of Almira Bailey, age 21, daughter of J.W. Bailey to James F. Allen, age 26, son of Joseph T. and Mary Allen. Mention of this marriage is made in the July 18, 1902 issue of The Grantsville News.

Of note, J.W. Bailey who married Almira, and Martha Allen Bailey, who married Guy, were brother/sister, son/daughter of Joseph T. Allen (1839 - 1915). Joseph T. Allen married Mary leach 3/13/1860 in Barbour County. Other children of Joseph T. and Mary Leach Allen include William H., b.c. 1862; John W., b.c. 1863; Enoch b.c. 1865; Colonel Elsworth b. 8/1871; and Perry b.c. 1879.

The 1930 census for the family of Fielden Allen shows John and Greeta Arthur as a member of his family, son in law and daughter.

In regards to the family of J.T. Allen, there is apparantly family relationship to this family, other that that noted above.

J.T. Allen is noted to be a veteran of the Civil War:
ALLEN, Joseph T., Private, born 2 May 1838, Hampshire Co., died 31 July 1915, buried Mt. Zion Cemetery. Enlisted 16 Feb. 1865, discharged 30 June 1865, Company E, 17th West Virginia Vol. Infantry. Union.

As noted above, there were 7 children in this family, six living as of the 1910 census.

William H., born Jan 1862. Census information available at the subscription service ancestry.com indicates that he married Roxetta Ashley in Wirt Co WV 6/8/1887, was living in Wirt Co in 1900 and was with his family in Summit County Ohio working in the match factory in 1920 and 1930.

John W. Allen, born 1863. A marriage record at the West Virginia archives at this link documents the marriage August 9, 1896 of J.W. Allen, age 30, son of Jos. T. and Mary Allen, to Lucretia Houchin, age 20, daughter of Frank and Sarah Houchin.

J.T. Allen and son Colonel Ellsworth Allen, 1900 Census, Lee District, Calhoun Co. WV

Colonel Elsworth Allen married Rosa L. Kelly 7/14/1891. Their children included Martha L., b. 3/1892; Carl b. 3/1894; Lovel b. 1/1896, married Euna Barr 6/9/1918, children Irene Frances b.c. 1921, m. Ira D. Hathaway 10/23/1945, Harold b.c. 1925, and Ilene Elaine b.c. 1932, m. Thomas Barker 7/29/1950; Elva b. 9/1899; Anna b.c. 1900, Russel b.c. 1906, and Luster b.c. 1908.

Colonel Elsworth may seem to be an unusual name. Perhaps he was named in honor of Colonel Elmer Ephraim Ellsworth (April 11, 1837 May 24, 1861), know as the first conspicuous union casualty of the Civil War.

CRAY DUELLEY

Cray Duelley, 81, of Millstone, died Sunday, Aug. 21, 2011, at Camden Clark Medical Center, Memorial Campus, Parkersburg.

He was born in Gilmer County, the son of the late Edgar and Vergil Pearl Harris Duelley.

He worked 32 years in the oil field, retiring from employment with Carl Morris. He was a farmer and raised cattle.

Surviving are one daughter, Debra Griffin and husband John of Creston; four sisters, Lilly Gay Wilson of Glenville, Mary Virginia Sprouse of Ohio, Flora Kathleen Merriman of Pennsylvania and Georgia Maggie Harold of Stinson; and two brothers, Loren Duelley of Wellington, Ohio, and Edgar Bub Duelley of Newberne.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Sylvia Allen Duelley, in 1978; two sisters, Elvy May Yeager and Betty Jo Maxwell; and three brothers, Ray Duelley, Fay Duelley and Dorsey Scott Duelley.

Services were scheduled Wednesday, 1 p.m., at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Rev. Carl Marks officiating, and burial in Sturm Cemetery, Millstone.
