Notes on Icie Mae Duvall

Icie Mae Duvall was born September 7, 1888, the daughter of John Duvall and Bertie Everson Duvall.

Note that in some records, her first name is spelled Icie or Icy, the middle name is spelled May or Mae, and the last name sometimes spelled Duval or Duvol.

Her death certification lists her parents as John Duvall and Bertie Everson, with place of birth given as Ritchie County, online AT THIS LINK. (Note: the 1900 census record give her place of birth as Ohio). Bertie Everson, daughter of Thomas Hart Benton Everson and Ruth Ice Everson, married and later was divorced from John Duvall, the father of Icie Mae Duvall. Bertie Everson Duvall later became remarried to William P. Price.

Icie Mae Duvall married Allen Brown Starcher on October 25, 1904. Allen was 19 years old at the time, and Icie was 16. A copy of the marriage certificate is reproduced AT THIS LINK

Allen and Icie spent their entire married life on their farm on Daniels Run, Calhoun County WV. The farm was located at the fork in the road where the right fork turns to head back to Route 16 at the top of Millstone Hill.

Icie Starcher died April 21, 1950 of stroke and complications related to stroke, aged 61 years, 7 months, 14 days. She was buried in the cemetery at the Mt Zion Methodist Church in Calhoun County. An image of her death record is available AT THIS LINK. The information recorded in this record was given by Justine Starcher, youngest surviving child of Allen B. and Icie Starcher.

Of note, Icie's mother Bertie Everson Duvall Price was a sister of Sarah E. Everson Workman. Three of Sarah E. Everson Workman's daughters married brothers of Allen Brown Starcher. Thus, Icie had three cousins who were also sisters-in-law.

Services Last Sun. For Mrs. Allen Starcher

Funeral services were held last Sunday, April 23, for Mrs. Icie May Starcher, 63, wife of Allen B. Starcher of Daniel's Run, who died April 21, at her home after a long illness. L.L. Miller was the officiating minister in services held from the Millstone Church of Christ and burial was in the Mt. Zion cemetery.

Mrs. Starcher was born on Sept. 7, 1888 in Ritchie county. Daughter of the late John Driscoll (ed note, error), and Bertie Everson. In addition to her husband, she is survived by the following children: Melvin H. Starcher, Millstone; Delbert Starcher, Barberton; Victor Starcher, Sistersville; Richard Starcher, Barberton; Denver Starcher, Middlebourne; Mrs. Opal Nitz, Mt. Zion; Mrs. Beulah Carpenter, Millstone; Mrs. Nina Boatright, Barberton and Miss Justine Starcher, at home; five sisters; Irene Duvall, Michigan; Mrs. Blanch Sharp, New Martinsville; Mrs. Rose Minney, Pittsburgh; Mrs. Pearl Laughlin, Beech; Mrs. Melva Wagoner and Mrs. Dora Carpenter of Letherbark; and 18 grandchildren. Four children preceded her in death.

(Editor's note: The obituary above lists five sisters for Icie May Starcher. These were actually half-sisters. The first two, Irene Duvall, Michigan, and Mrs. Blanch Sharp, New Martinsville, were the daughters of John W. Duvall (DeVaul) and his later marriage to Willmina Teaman Noland in 1902 (see Notes on Bertie Everson and Notes on John W. DuVall (DeVaul). The other sisters listed are the daughters of Bertie and William Peter Price).

Allen B. Starcher Services On Saturday

Allen B. Starcher, 84, of Millstone, died Wednesday evening January 28 (1970) in Calhoun General hospital after a brief illness.

Born in Calhoun county, he was a son of the late Thomas and Mary Smith Starcher, and attended the Millstone Church of Christ. He was a retired farmer.

Survivors include his wife, Delta Starcher; five sons, Melvin Starcher of Millstone, Delbert and Richard Starcher, both of Barberton, Ohio, Denver and Victor Starcher, both of Sistersville; one step-son, Roy Wilson of Dunbar; four daughters, Mrs. Opal NItz and Mrs. Nina Boatright,, both of Barberton, Mrs. Beulah Burden of West Salem, Ohio, and Mrs. Justine Miller of Spencer ; one brother, Fred Starcher of Barberton, and one sister, Mrs. Viola Cogar of Lockney; 31 grandchildren and 37 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Icy Starcher.

Funeral services were held Saturday, January 31, at the Stump funeral home with the Rev. Clarence Pierson and Evangelist Gene Miller officiating. Burial was in the Mt. Zion cemetery.
