Notes on Hannibal Maffet

Editor's note: The Maffet name is spelled in various sources sometimes as Maffet or Maffett. The death certificate of Hannibal Maffet has "one t." The editor has converted the spelling of the name to the "one t" spelling with apologies to any family members who might take issue).

Hannibal Maffet was born January 1871, a son of Aseneth Norman.

The best available evidence available to this writer indicates that his father was one Isaac Maffet who was born in England about 1823 (see below).

The 1920 Federal census (see below) lists his wife as Virginia Maffet, age 43. He was a widower in 1930, thus, his wife died between 1920 and 1930. Death records online AT THIS LINK record the death of Ellen Virgina Maffet, died in Calhoun Co WV January 15, 1923, age 46 years, 3 months, 12 days. Her parents listed as Alonzo Stump born in Calhoun County and Mary Elizabeth Hall Stump born in Nichols County, cause of death cancer. Noted in passing, a family tree found at the subscription service indicates date of birth for Ellen Virginia as October 3, 1874, and gives her name as Virginia Ellen Stump rather than Ellen Virginia Stump. She is identified in the census records noted below as Jennie, Jennie, and Virginia, 5 or 6 years younger than Hannibal.

Reproduced is a "Card of Thanks" found in The Calhoun Chronicle, January 4, 1923:

Arnoldsburg W.Va., Dec. 28 1922
We wish to extend our heart felt thanks to the many friends who helped us during the sickness, death, and burial of our dear wife and mother who departed this life December 22, 1922, having been confined to her bed for one year and eight days.

H.M. Maffett and Family

From the Booher page which is found AT THIS LINK, on the website Don Norman's Family Files:
Asenath Booher, a daughter of Jacob and Nancy (McCune) Booher, was born in Ritchie County Va 1842 and died May 24, 1927.

She married William Zinn Norman in Calhoun County VA (WV) September 22, 1860.

William, a son of James Nedley and Catherine (Summers) Norman, was born in VA about 1839 and died before 1870.

Asenath was apparently pregnant when she was married. Her first child, Thomas Jackson Starcher, was born in December 1860. His father was Thomas Starcher, a son of Adam and Phoebe (Coger) Starcher. Thomas was born about 1832 and is believed to have died in the Civil War after June 17, 1864.

Asenath was listed as a widow in the 1870 Calhoun County WV census. She had three children living with her. She apparently had two more children.

The 1930 Federal census listing for Lee District, Calhoun County WV shows Hannibal now living in the household of his son Ralph, with Ralph being listed as the head:
Ralph Maffet, head, age 30
Arvilla Maffet, wife, age 28
Han M., father, age 56, widower

Of note, again we find this listing on the same census page as that for Allen B. Starcher.

In the 1930 census, there is a separate listing for...

Rex Maffet, head, age 28, age 22 at first marriage
Gladis Maffet, wife, age 22, age 16 at first marriage
Madeline Maffet, daughter, age 5
Ralph Maffet, son of Hannibal Maffett, was born October 8, 1899. He married Arvella Everson January 30, 1921. Am image of their marriage certificate is available AT THIS LINK. Arvella Everson, born in 1902, was the daughter of Thomas Watson "Watt" Everson, and the granddaughter of Thomas and Ruth Ice Everson. Ralph died September 1976, and Arvella died December 14, 1992.

Rex Maffett, son of Hannibal Maffett, was born July 2, 1901. He married Gladie Nitz. Gladie Nitz was born October 19, 1907, the daughter of Guy and Laura Wood Nitz. Rex died December 1980, and Gladie died June 13, 2000.

Delma Justine Starcher Miller, daughter of Allen B. Starcher, has remarked by way of oral history her remembrance of a "Grandma Norman" and "Uncle Han."

H.N. Maffet is listed as the source of information on the death certificate of infant Pauline Starcher who died in 1932, and would have been the younger sister of Justine. Hannibal Maffet would have been her great-uncle.

Rex Maffet had a used furniture store at the south end of Mt Zion Ridge in Calhoun at the top of Millstone Hill. This writer remembers visiting Rex at his furniture store with parents Corley and Justine (Starcher) Miller. Some family connection with Rex and Justine was suspected, as Justine and Rex always seemed to talk rather than conduct furniture business. As it turns out, Rex was Justine's first cousin once removed. Rex and his father Hannibal lived in the neighborhood where Justine grew up, and Hannibal was obviously a family friend and relative.

Hannibal died January 24, 1961, age 89 years, one month, six days. His certificate of death is available AT THIS LINK, indicating his mother to be Aseneth Norman and father Issac Maffet. His death was reported by Rex Maffet.
