The Calhoun Chronicle, a weekly newspaper published in Grantsville, West Virginia, has for many years published news from various communities. "Daniels Run News" has been an occasional to semi-regular feature. Here are some transcripts. We hope to add more as time and occasion permit.

January 13, 1955


Mr. and Mrs. Denver Starcher and twin sons, Victor and Denver, of Middlebourne, W. Va., were calling on his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Allen B. Starcher, Sunday.

Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Queen of Cleveland, O., and Mason Queen of Sand Fork were Christmas Day guests of Mrs. Queen's brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs Henry Marks.

Mr. and Mrs. Victor Starcher and daughters of Sistersville were visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs Allen B. Starcher recently.

Miss Etta Mae Tanner of Arnoldsburg were visiting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Coy Suttles and family, during the Christmas holidays.

Mr. and Mrs Rex Maffet of Barberton, O., spent a few days at their home here, during the holidays. They were called back to Barberton Wednesday of last week, due to the illness of their granddaughter, Julian Jean Carpenter, who was hospitalized.

Mr. and Mrs Allen B. Starcher were calling on Mr. and Mrs. Henry Marks Sunday.

Mrs. Eva Starcher were calling on her sister-in-law, Lenora Starcher, Tuesday.

Lenora Starcher was consulting Dr. Toepher in Grantsville, Friday.

Mr. and Mrs Vere Price and son, Loren were visiting her parents Mr. and Mrs.Dee Nitz, one day this past week.

Sue Starcher was visiting Mrs. Henry Marks Saturday evening.

Henry Marks visited at the Allen B. Starcher home Saturday evening.

Geraldine Starcher was visiting with Mrs. Henry Marks Sunday.

Mrs. Helen Naylor and family were calling on her mother, Mrs. Lenora Starcher, Sunday.

Mrs. Vena Marks and Geraldine Starcher were visiting with Mr. and Mrs. Allen B. Starcher, Sunday evening.

Henry Marks was calling on Mr. and Mrs Allen B. Starcher, Monday evening.

Roger Paul Parsons has been ill with cold, but is improved now.

Coy Suttles was calling on Allen B. Starcher, Tuesday.

Mrs. Leah Suttles and son, Charles, were visiting with Mrs. Vena Marks and Roger Paul, Wednesday.

Henry Marks was shopping at Roy Morgan's store Thursday.

Ferris Barr was shopping at Roy Morgan's store, Friday.

H.M. Maffet was calling on Coy Suttles and Henry Marks, Friday.

Coy Suttles and son, Charles were shopping at Henry Morgan's store, Saturday.

Mr. and Mrs. Coy Suttles and children were visiting Mr. and Mrs. Forrest Carr, Saturday night.

Mrs. Lenora Starcher and children, Louis, Russell and Geraldine were Sunday guests of Mrs. Helen Naylor and family of Barnes Run.

Mrs. Leah Suttles and children were visiting Mrs. Carrie Reed, Sunday evening.

Lenora Starcher and grand-daughter, Diana, were visiting Mrs. Henry Marks and Roger Paul, Monday afternoon.

Mrs. Hattie Booher was Tuesday guest of Mrs. Ferris Barr.

Mrs. Coy Suttles and daughter, Lena Gae were calling on Mrs. Vena Marks, Tuesday.

Henry Marks was calling on Allen B. Starcher Wednesday evening.

Mr. and Mrs Allen B. Starcher were visiting Mr. and Mrs Bud Burch of Mt Zion one day last week.

Louis Starcher arrived here from Barberton, O., Wednesday night and was taken to the Coplin Clinic in Elizabeth, where he underwent surgery on Thursday afternoon. He is reported to be recovering nicely.

Lenora Starcher and daughter, Geraldine and Guy Wood were in Elizabeth, Friday, visiting Louis Starcher, who is a patient in the Coplin Clinic there.

Sue and Charles Starcher were shopping at Roy Morgan's store Friday evening.

Mr. and Mrs Allen B Starcher were shopping in Grantsville, Saturday.

Cecil Mitchell and family moved to their new home near Elizabeth one day this week.

Geraldine Starcher and H.M. Maffett were visiting Mr. and Mrs Henry Marks Saturday afternoon.

Mr. and Mrs Coy Suttles and family were visiting Mrs. Betty Harris, Saturday.

Those visiting Mr. and Mrs Allen B. Starcher Saturday night were Lenora Starcher and daughter, Geralidne, Mr. and Mrs Henry Marks and Roger Paul and Donald Booher.

Russell Starcher came home last Wednesday evening from Barberton, Ohio, for a week. The shop where he is employed was on a week's lay off. His brother Louis came in Friday night also from Barberton, on his two week's vacation.

Mr. and Mrs. Roy Wilson and children, Janice and Bobby, and Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Brammer and children of Dunbar were visiting Mr. and Mrs. Allen B. Starcher over the week end.

Coy Suttles and family moved from the farm of Allen B. Starcher the first of this week.

Henry Marks was visiting Allen B. Starcher Friday evening.

Lenora Starcher and daughter Geraldine were calling on Vena Marks, Friday evening.

Mr. and Mrs. Roscoe Carpenter and children, Judy, Janet and Jeffery Dean, and Rex Maffet of Barberton, O., spent the week end here with Mrs. Maffet and other relatives.

Mr. and Mrs. Vere Price and son, Loren, were visiting her folks, Mr. and Mrs Dee Nitz, Saturday.

Folks shopping in town Saturday were Mr. and Mrs. Allen B. Starcher, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Marks and Roger Paul, Melvin Starcfher, Mr. and Mrs. Coy Rader and sons, Homer and Tommy.

Among those shopping at Roy Morgan's store Saturday were Lovell Allen, Donald Booher and Henry Marks.

Jack Booher spent the holiday week end with his folks, Mr. and Mrs. Luther Booher. Jack is employed in Barberton, Ohio.

Jerry Reed of the U.S. Navy spent a leave visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Carrie Reed and other relatives and friends, recently.

Lov and Russell Starcher spent the week end here visiting their mother, Lenora Starcher .

Mrs. Ilene Barker went to Barberton, O., Monday to spend some time with her brother and family Mr. and Mrs. Harold Allen.

Lenora Starcher and daughter, Geraldine, was visiting Vena Marks, Monday afternoon.

The children of Mr. and Mrs. Coy Suttles have been ill.

Mrs. Lester Booher was visiting Mrs. Ferris Barr, Monday.

H.M. Maffet was visiting Mr. and Mrs. Luther Booher Tuesday evening.

Mr. and Mrs. Henry Marks and Roger Paul and Lenora Starcher and daughter, Geraldine were visiting with Mr. and Mrs Allen B. Starcher, Wednesday evening.

Melvin Starcher was calling on Henry marks Saturday morning.

Charles Rader, of Barberton, O., spent the week end with his mother, Mrs. Coy Rader.

Mr. and Mrs. Vere Price and son, Loren, Henry Marks and Roger were visiting Mr. and Mrs. Dee Nitz, Saturday.

Among folks shopping at Morgan's store Saturday were Mrs. Henry Marks, Terry Naylor and Donald Booher.

Mr. and Mrs. Allen B. Starcher were business callers in town, Saturday.

We were sorry indeed to hear of the death of Jack Carpenter. The family has our sympathy.

Lenora Starcher and daughter returned from Barberton, Ohio, Saturday where they spent a week visiting relatives. They were accompanied home by Louis and Russell, who returned to their work, Sunday.

Henry Marks was visiting with Allen B. Starcher, Sunday morning.

Miss Minnie Hamilton, county health nurse, was visiting the Daniels Run school, Tuesday.

Vena Marks was visiting Lenora Starcher, Wednesday.

Mr. and Mrs Allen B. Starcher were in Spencer, Wednesday, where Mrs. Starcher was consulting her doctor.

Henry Marks was business visitor in town, Thursday.

Mr. and Mrs Clyde Amos of Revere were calling on Mrs. Henry Marks, Friday.

We had our first snow here, Friday.

Mr. and Mrs. Roy Wilson and children and Mrs and Mrs Floyd Brammer and children of Dunbar arrived here Friday evening to visit Mr and Mrs. Allen B. Starcher.

Mrs. Lester Booher and son, Donald, were calling on H.M. Maffet, Saturday morning.

Allen B. Starcher butchered two calves and three hogs, Saturday. He was assisted by Roy Wilson, Floyd Brammer and Henry Marks.

Folks shopping at Morgan's store Saturday from here were Mrs. Hattie Booher and Donald, and Mrs. Vena Marks and Roger Paul.

Mr. and Mrs. Delbert Lynch and children were visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lester Booher, Saturday.

Little Miss Diana Naylor was visiting Mrs. Vena Marks, Sunday.

Henry Marks was working at Arnoldsburg, Monday, for Eugene Starcher .

Several folks were at Rocksdale from here Tuesday to vote in the bond election.

Allen B. Starcher helped Henry Marks butcher a beef, Tuesday afternoon.

Lenora Starcher was helping Mrs. Delta Starcher work in meat, Wednesday.

Allen B. Starcher was a business caller in town, Wednesday.

Lenora Starcher was helping Mrs. Henry Marks, Thursday.

Luther Booher and Donald Booher were at the Spencer livestock sale, Friday.

Mrs. Ferris Barr was visiting with Mrs. A.M. Nester, Friday.

Miss Geraldine Starcher was visiting her sister, Mrs. Helen Naylor, Friday.

Mr. and Mrs. Henry Marks, Roger Paul, Geraldine Starcher and Mrs. Velma Wood and sons, Ronnie and Roger, were all shopping at Roy Morgan's store, Saturday.

Mr. and Mrs. Rex Maffet of Barberton, O., spent the week end at their home here, and were visiting relatives and friends.

Lenora Starcher and daughter, Geraldine, were calling on her daughter, Mrs. Helen Naylor and family, Sunday.

Miss Geraldine Starcher and Diana Naylor were visiting Mrs. Henry Marks, Sunday evening.

Allen B. Starcher and Corley Miller were at Henry marks' Monday to help him butcher, but by the weather being so warm, decided not to butcher until it got colder .

Mrs. Una Allen was visiting with Lenora Starcher, Monday.

Mrs. Carrie Reed and son, Alvin Lee, and Henry Marks were all visiting H.M. Maffet, Monday afternoon.

Walter Marks and Carl Harris were Wednesday night guests of Henry Marks and family.

Mrs. Feris Barr was calling on friends, Thursday.

Lenora Starcher was shopping at Morgan's store, Friday.

H.M. Maffet was visiting Henry Marks, Friday.

Mr. and Mrs. Allen B. Starcher were business callers in Spencer, Friday.

December 1, 1955


Those visiting Mrs. Henry Marks, Sunday, were Donald Harris, Miss Geraldine Starcher and Diana Naylor.

Lenora Starcher was visiting her daughter, Mrs. Helen Naylor, Sunday.

Due to the colder weather there was quite a lot of butchering done here this week. Henry Marks butchered two hogs, Monday. Ed Starcher butchered two hogs Monday, Melvin Starcher butchered a hog, Tuesday, and Pratt Barr butchered a hog, Thursday.

Lenora Starcher was helping Mrs. Henry Marks in meat, Tuesday.

Mr. and Mrs Russell Starcher of Barberton, O., came in Wednesday to spend Thanksgiving with his mother, Lenora Starcher.

Mrs. Grace Barr was visiting Mrs. Vena Marks, Wednesday.

Mr. and Mrs. Vere Price were visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Dee Nitz, one day last week.

Mrs. Janet Starcher and Miss Geraldine Starcher were calling on Mrs. Vena Marks, Thursday.

Lovis Paul Starcher of Barberton, Ohio, spent the holiday week end visiting his mother, Lenora Starcher.

Mr. and Mrs. Virgil queen of Cleveland, Ohio, arrived here Friday to spend the holiday week end with her brother-in-law and sister, Mr and Mrs. Henry Marks.

Mr. and Mrs. Allen B. Starcher were shopping in town, Saturday.

Mr. and Mrs. Henry Marks and Roger Paul and Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Queen were attending to business in Grantsville and Glenville, Saturday.

Pratt Barr of Akron, Ohio, spent the week end with his family here.

Mr. and Mrs. Victor Starcher and children of Sistersville were Thanksgiving guests of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Allen B. Starcher.

Mrs. Delta Starcher and Lenora Starcher were helping Mrs. Bud Burch in meat, Monday.

Henry Marks was ill of quinsy this past week.

Mr. and Mrs. Rex Maffet spent this week here at their home and were visiting relatives.

Allen B. Starcher was calling on Henry Marks, Tuesday morning.

Mrs. Vena Marks was visiting Lenora Starcher, Wednesday.

H.M. Maffet was calling on Henry Marks, Wednesday.

Mr. and Mrs. Allen B. starcher were visiting Mr. and Mrs. Henry Marks, Thursday evening.

Lenora Starcher and daughter, Geraldine, were shopping in Spencer, Saturday.

Mrs. Henry Marks and Roger Paul, Lester Booher and son, Donald, were among the folks shopping at Morgan's store, Saturday.

Mr. and Mrs. Allen B. Starcher were shopping in town, Saturday.

Mrs. Velma Wood gave a stork shower for Mrs. Irene Lynch at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lester Booher, Saturday evening.

December 22, 1955


Mr. and Mrs. Vere Price and son Loren were visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Dee Nitz, Sunday.

Dee Nitz, Vere Price and Henry Marks were all visiting H.M. Maffet Sunday at Clyde Allen's. Mr. Maffet got his knee hurt and this caused a blood clot and he was unable to walk for awhile. He is improving at this time.

Allen B. Starcher, Henry Marks and Guy Wood butchered two nice hogs for Cray Duelly, Monday.

Forest Craddock, Guy Wood and Ed Starcher have been working some this past week for Mallie Carpenter.

Among folks shopping at Roy Morgan's store Thursday were Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Allen and Henry Marks.

Lenora Starcher was visiting her daughter, Mrs. Helen Naylor and family, Friday.

Mrs. Henry Marks was visiting Mrs. Allen B. Starcher, Friday afternoon.

Mr. and Mrs. Rex Maffet came in Friday night from Barberton, Ohio, to take his father, H.M. Maffet back to Barberton for the rest of the winter. We will miss Mr. Maffet here in the community.

Folks shopping in Grantsville from here Saturday were Mr. and Mrs. Allen B. Starcher, Geraldine Starcher and Melvin Starcher .

Mrs. Vena Marks and Mr. and Mrs. Allen B. Starcher were shopping at Arnoldsburg, Saturday.

Mr. and Mrs. Allen Dee Nitz of Barberton, Ohio, are the proud parents of a daughter, born December 4. Paternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs Greely Nitz of Barberton, formerly of this section. The little girl has two sets of great-grandparents living here. They are Mr. and Mrs. Allen B. Starcher and Mrs. Dee Nitz. This is Mr. and Mrs. Starcher's seventh great-grandchild.
