The Calhoun Chronicle, a weekly newspaper published in Grantsville, West Virginia, has for many years published news from various communities. "Daniels Run News" has been an occasional to semi-regular feature. Here are some transcripts. We hope to add more as time and occasion permit.

January 7, 1954


Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Queen of Cleveland, O., spent Christmas with his uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Crosby Queen of Weston. They visited her sister and family, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Marks of Daniels Run. His only brother, Shirley Queen , passed away on Christmas night. The funeral was held on Monday afternoon at Sand fork.

Other folk that spent the holidays here were Mr. and Mrs. Rex Maffet of Barberton, O., Carrie Reed of Cleveland, O., and his son, James of Barberton, Ohio.

Louis and Russell Starcher of Barberton, O., spent the holidays with their mother and sister here.

Was sorry to hear of the death of Mrs. Dona Fowler, The family has our heartfelt sympathy.

H.M. Maffet was visiting Mr. and Mrs. Henry Marks last Tuesday night.

The second well that Mallie Carpenter drilled on Allen B. Starcher's farm is reported to be a good well.

Mr. Vena Marks and Roger Paul were calling on Mrs Delta Starcher, Friday.

Guy Wood and Melvin Starcher were visiting Henry Marks, Saturday.

Holly Nester was Doing some surveying for Eugene Starcher, Saturday.

Mr. and Mrs. Allen B. Starcher were shopping in Grantsville, Saturday.

Mr. and Mrs. Quinton Ballentyne and children, Micky, Mary Ann and Kitty, of Cleveland, O., arrived Saturday night to visit her sister and family, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Marks.

Mr and Mrs. Vere Price and son, Loren, were visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Dee Nitz, Saturday.

Mr . and Mrs. Allen B. Starcher were visiting his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs Corley Miller and daughter, Sharon, of Phillips Run.

It has been cold and wet and muddy around here for several weeks. That is part of the reason this reporter's news has been absent for a few weeks. Have been unable to get out to hear any news to have to write about.

Mrs. Velma Woods and sons, Ronnie and roger, and Mr. and Mrs. Lester Booher were shopping in town, Saturday.

H.M. Maffet and Melvin Starcher were visiting with Mr. and Mrs. Henry Marks.

Beverly Nester and brother, Lyle, were visiting their grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. A.M. Nester, Sunday.

Mrs. Henry Marks and Roger Paul and Miss Lenora Starcher were shopping at Roy Morgan's store, Monday.

Mr. and Mrs. Allen B. Starcher were shopping in Spencer, Monday.

Henry Marks was calling on Mr. and Mrs. Ferris Barr, Wednesday.

Mr. and Mrs. Roy Hildreth of Spencer were Friday dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Allen B. Starcher.

Mrs. Velma Wood, Mrs. Vena Marks, Mr. and Mrs. Allen B. Starcher, Melvin Starcher and Donald Burch were all shopping in town, Saturday.

Mr. and Mrs Lester Booher and son, Donald, and Miss Lenora Starcher and Geraldine Starcher were all shopping at Roy Morgan's store Saturday.

We were very sorry to hear of the death of T.W. Everson. The family has our deepest sympathy.

Mr. and Mrs. Allen B. Starcher and H.M. Maffet attended the funeral of T.W. Everson Sunday.

Miss Lenora and Geraldine Starcher were calling on Mrs. Henry Marks Sunday.

Raph Maffet and son-in-law were visiting his father, H.M. Maffet, one evening last week.

There was no school Monday due tho the big snow we had.

H.M. Maffet was visiting Mr. and Mrs. Henry Marks Thursday afternoon.

Lovell Allen and Henry Marks were shopping at Roy Morgan's store Thursday.

Mr. and Mrs. Allen B. Starcher were visiting Mr. and Mrs. Henry Marks Thursday evening.

Cecil Mitchell has been helping Rex Carpenter haul the drilling outfit to the farm of Dee Nitz.

Mrs. Muriel Price and son were visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Dee Nitz Saturday. Mr. and Mrs Allen B. Starcher were shopping in Grantsville Last Saturday.

Henry Marks was calling on Allen B. Starcher, Sunday.

Mrs. Guy Wood and son, Roger, and H.M. Maffet were visiting Mr. and Mrs. Henry Marks, Tuesday.

Luther Booher and H.M. Maffet were business callers in town Thursday.

Mr. and Mrs. Vere Price were visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Dee Nitz, Friday.

Those shopping in town Saturday were Mr. and Mrs. Allen B. Starcher, Mrs. Vena Marks, H.M. Maffet, and Cyde Allen.

Miss Bertha Gunn of Mt. Zion was a Saturday night and Sunday guest of Mrs. Hattie Booher.

Lenora Starcher and granddaughter, Diana, were visiting Mrs. Henry Marks, Sunday morning.

Guests of Mr. and Mrs. Guy Wood Sunday were Mrs. Vena Marks and Roger Paul and Mr. and Mrs . Lester Booher.

Mr. and Mrs. Vere Price were calling on her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Dee Nitz, Thursday.

Mr. and Mrs. Allen B. Starcher were shopping in town, Saturday.

Eugene Starcher of Arnoldsburg was calling on Henry Marks Saturday.

Mr. and Mrs. Roy Wilson and children of Dunbar were week end guests of his mother and step father, Mr. and Mrs Allen B. Starcher.

Donald Booher was visiting Henry Marks, Saturday evening.

March 18, 1954


Mrs. Lester Booher was taken to a Parkersburg hospital last Saturday night and underwent surgery Monday. We are certainly sorry Mrs. Booher is ill and we are wishing her a speed recovery.

Neighbors calling on Mr. and Mrs. Henry Marks Sunday were H.M. Maffet, Lenora Starcher, Mrs. Ferris Barr, Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Starcher, Allen B. Starcher, Virgil Marks and Brookzen, Judith Marie and Alvin Lee Reed.

Several folks have colds around here. This reporter has had her share of colds this winter.

Coy Rader has been helping Allen B. Starcher with this farm work.

Luther Booher, Henry Marks, Cecil Mitchell and son, Bob, were baling hay in Roane County, Monday and Tuesday, for Eugene Starcher.

Mrs. Ferris Barr was visiting Mr. and Mrs. A. M. Nester Wednesday.

Mrs. Vere Price was visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Dee Nitz on day this week.

Roy Nester was visiting his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. A. M. Nester Saturday.

Mr. and Mrs. Allen B. Starcher and Mrs. Vena Marks were shopping in Grantsville, Saturday.

Louis and Russell Starcher of Barberton, O., spent the week end with their mother, Lenora Starcher.

Mr. and Mrs. Roy Wilson and children of Dunbar were week end guests of his mother and step father, Mr. and Mrs. Allen B. Starcher.

Coy Rader returned to his job two weeks ago in Barberton, O.

Mr. and Mrs. Rex Maffet went back to Barberton, O., over a week ago. Mr. Maffet was called back to his job.

Mr. and Mrs Vere Price and son, Loren, were the Sunday visitors of Mr. and Mrs. Dee Nitz.

H.M. Maffet was Easter Sunday dinner guest of Mr. nd Mrs. Henry Marks. Other visitors in the afternoon were Mrs. Coy Rader and children, Judy, Emogene, Jimmy, Jewel and Russell.

Mrs. Vena Marks was shopping at Roy Morgan's store Friday.

Gail Little has been doing some farm work for Lenora Starcher.

Mr. and Mrs. Allen B. Starcher was visiting her brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Bud Burch Friday night.

Mr. Carpenter moved load of the well drilling outfit to the location made on Lenora Starcher farm Saturday. The well on Dee Nittz's farm is about completed.

H.M. Maffet, Bud Burch and daughter, Carol, Henry Marks and Roger Paul were all calling on Mr. and Mrs Allen B. Starcher Saturday.

Mr. and Mrs. Clayton Loucks and children, Ruth Ann and Clayton Earl, of Barberton, O., arrived here Friday to spend the week end with her parents, Mr. and Mrs Ferris Barr.

Mr. and Mrs. Victor Starcher and daughters of Sistersville were visiting his father and step-mother, Mr. and Mrs. Allen B. Starcher, last Sunday.

Eugene Starcher and son of Arnoldsburg were calling on Henry Marks, Sunday morning.

Henry Marks was at Roy Sturm's home Sunday.

Mr. and Mrs. Allen B. Starcher were visiting with Mr. and Mrs. henry Marks, Sunday evening.

Mrs. Vena Marks was visiting with Mrs. Delta Starcher, Monday.

Mr. and Mrs. Rex Maffet and granddaughter, Janet Carpenter, of Barberton, O., arrived here Friday to spend the week end at their home.

Mr. and Mrs. Allen B. Starcher were business callers in town, Saturday.

Mr. and Mrs Henry Marks and Roger Paul, Mr. and Mrs. L.L. Parsons were visiting Mrs. Marks and Mrs Parsons' aunts, Mrs. Aggie Parsons and Mrs. Leath Cottrill of Leafbank, Saturday and shopping in town.

Quite a few folks were attending the drive-in theatre Saturday night.

It has been rainy and cool here for several days and we have had some light frost.

Mrs. Lester Booher and son, Donald, Mrs . Vena Marks and Roger Paul were shopping at Roy Morgan's store Thursday.

Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Queen of Cleveland, O., arrived here Friday evening to spend the holidays with her brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Marks.

Mr. and Mrs. Roy Wilson and children and Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Brammer and children of Dunbar were the week end guests of Mr. Wilson's step father and mother, Mr. and Mrs Allen B. Starcher.

Miss Retha Maffet and James Weldon of Barberton, O., were visiting her father, H.M. Maffet, over the week end.

Lou and Russell Starcher of Barberton, O., spent the week end with their mother, Lenora Starcher .

Carrie Reed and son, James, spent the week end at their home here. They are employed in Ohio.

Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Bailey and children of Windham O., spent the week end visiting relatives in this county.

Ferris Barr was calling at Henry Marks Saturday evening.

Mr. and Mrs. Allen B. Starcher were shopping in Grantsville last Saturday.

Mr. and Mrs. Rufe Mace of Barberton, O., spent the week end here visiting relatives.

Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Queen and Mrs. Vena Marks and Roger were visitors in Grantsville and Glenville Saturday.

Delbert Starcher of Barberton, O., spent the week end here visiting his father and step mother, Mr. and Mrs. Allen B. Starcher.

Sunday visitors of H.M. Maffet were Mr. and Mrs. Clay Wilson o Pine Creek, J.B. Booher of Gauley Bridge, Mr. and Mrs. Louise Harris and two sons of Bull River, Mr. and Mrs. Luther Booher and son, Jack, also his daughter, Miss Retha Maffet, and James Weldon of Barberton, O.

Hay harvest and corn hoeing is keeping farmers busy at this time in our community.

Mr. and Mrs Vere Price and son, Loren, were visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Dee Nitz, one evening last week.

Mr. and Mrs. Quinton Ballantyne of Cleveland, O., are announcing the arrival of a son on May 28 at a Cleveland hospital. The young man weighed ten pounds, four ounces and was named Andrew Allen. Mrs. Ballantyne is the former Miss Gae Parsons.

Mrs. Hattie Boooher and son, Donald, have spent a week visiting friends and relatives in Barberton, O.

Mr. and Mrs. Rex Maffet and two granddaughters, Judy and Janet Carpenter of Barberton, O., came in Friday night to spend a week at their home here.

A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Roscoe Carpenter of Barberton, O., in June. He weighted ten pounds, 12 ounces and was named Jeffery Dean. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Carpenter of Sycamore and Mr. and Mrs. Rex Maffet of Barberton.

Mr. and Mrs. Quinton Ballantyne and children, Mary Ann, Kitty Kirk, and Andrew Allen, arrived here last Friday night to visit her brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Marks. Their son, Mickey, returned home with them Sunday. He had spent three weeks visiting at the Marks home.

Lenora Starcher and daughter, Geraldine, left here Sunday morning to spend a seek visiting relatives in Barberton.

Mrs. Vena Marks and Roger Paul were shopping at Roy Morgan's store, Tuesday.

Mrs. Velma Wood and sons, Ronnie and Roger, were visiting her aunt, Mrs. Levi Starcher, Friday.

Guy Wood was helping Henry Marks in hay harvest, Friday.

Miss Nannie Starcher, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Victor Starcher of Sistersville, has been visiting her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Allen B. Starcher, this week.

Henry Marks was at Arnoldsburg and also did some mowing for Roy Sturm, Saturday.

Mr. And Mrs. Allen B. Starcher were shopping in Grantsville, Saturday.

Miss Retha Maffet of Barberton, O., spent the week end visiting her father, H.M. Maffet.

Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Queen of Cleveland, O., were week end guests of her brother-iin-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Marks.

Mr. and Mrs. Greely Nitz and children of Barberton, O., spent the week end visiting their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Allen B. Starcher and Mr. and Mrs . Dee Nitz.

Mr. and Mrs. Russell Bibbie and sons of Torch, O., were visiting her grandfather, H.M. Maffet, over the week end.

A Dr. White has been around in our community testing cattle.

Mr. and Mrs. Vere Price and son were calling on her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Dee Nitz.

H.M. Maffett was visiting Henry Marks Monday.

Lou Starcher came in Friday night to visit his mother, Lenora Starcher, over the week end.

Paul Leach, who is employed in Ohio, spent the week end with his family here.

Folks shopping at Roy Morgan's store Saturday were Mrs. Vena Marks, Mrs. Hattie Booher, Mrs. Velma Wood and sons, and Miss Geraldine Starcher .

Mr. and Mrs. Roy Wilson and children and Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Brammer and children of Dunbar, who had spent a weeks vacation in the mountains, spent Friday night with Mr. and Mrs. Allen B. Starcher and started home Saturday morning.

Mr. and Mrs. Verdis Marks and daughter of Philo, O., and Mrs. Vina Harris were visiting Mr. and Mrs. Henry Marks Saturday.

Mr. and Mrs. Allen B. Starcher were shopping in Grantsville last Saturday.

Miss Retha Maffet of Barberton, O., and James Walden also of Barberton, were married on August 24 at Chatsworth, Georgia. They are both employed at the Diamond match company in Barberton. Mrs. Walden is the only daughter of H.M. Maffet. Mr. Walden is a native of Georgia.

Mr. and Mrs. Ray Wilson and children and MR. and Mrs. Floyd Brammer and children, all of Dunbar, spent the week end visiting Mr. and Mrs. Allen B. Starcher.

Mrs. Vena Marks and Roger Paul and Geraldine Starcher were among the folks shopping at Roy Morgans store, Saturday.

Mr. and Mrs. Allen b. Starcher were shopping in town, Saturday.

Delbert Starcher of Barberton, O., spent the week end with his father and step mother, Mr. and Mrs. Allen B. Starcher.

Mrs. Hattie Booher and Mrs. Velma Wood and sons were callers in town on day this week.

Eugene Starcher of Arnoldsburg was calling on Henry Marks, Sunday morning.

We have certainly had plenty of rain in our community and it has hindered farmers in the hay harvest.

H.M. Maffet was visiting Henry Marks and family one evening this week.

Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Queen of Cleveland, O., were the Labor day week end guests of her brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Marks.

Mr. and Mrs. Roy Wilson and children of Dunbar, W. Va., and Mrs. Wilson's sister of Fairmont, and Mr. and Mrs. Delbert Starcher of Barberton, O., were the week end guests of their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Allen B. Starcher .

Louis and Russell Starcher of Barberton were visiting their mother, Lenora Starcher, over the week end.

Mr. and Mrs . Harold Allen and children of Barberton, O., and Mr. and Mrs. Ira D. Hathaway and children of Parkersburg, W. Va., were guests of Mr. and Mrs. Lovell Allen over the week end.

Mrs. Helen Naylor and children were visiting her mother, Lenora Starcher, Sunday.

Mrs. Ilene Barker is spending this week with her brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Ira D. Hathaway of Parkersburg.

Coy Suttles was a business caller on Allen B. Starcher, Monday.

H.M. Maffet was calling on Ferris Barr, Monday evening.

Melvin Starcher and H.M. Maffet were visiting with Henry Marks, Wednesday .

Among the folks shopping at Roy Morgan's store Thursday were Mrs. Sylvia Mitchell, Mrs . Vena Marks and Roger Paul, and H.M Maffet.

Geraldine Starcher and little niece, Diana Naylor, were visiting Mrs. Henry Marks, Thursday evening.

Henry Marks was calling on Guy Wood, Thursday evening.

Mr. and Mrs. Coy Suttles and children moved Saturday to Allen B. Starcher's farm. We are glad to welcome them to this community.

Folks shopping in town Saturday from here were Mr. and Mrs. Allen B. Starcher, Mrs . Vena Marks and Melvin Starcher.

Mr. and Mrs Henry Marks lost a nice hog last week.

October 7, 1954


Congratulations are in order to Mr. and Mrs. Corley Miller of Phillips Run as they are the proud parents of a son, who arrived October 1 at the Boling clinic, weighing ten pounds. Mr. and Mrs. Grover Miller of Shock are paternal grandparents and Mr. and Mrs. Allen B. Starcher of Daniels Run are maternal grandparents. This is their second child. They have a beautiful little daughter, Sharon.

Sunday visitors of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Marks were Geraldine Starcher, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Marks and family, Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Harris, H.M. Maffet, Mrs. Helen Naylor and Ed Starcher.

Pratt Barr returned last Sunday to Akron to his job. He was accompanied by Mrs. Barr as she was consulting a doctor in Akron.

Lenora Starcher entertained with a birthday dinner for her youngest daughter, Geraldine, on her fifteenth birthday last Sunday, September 26. Present were Mrs. Helen Naylor and family, Louis Starcher, Sylvia Mitchell and Ed Starcher.

We were sorry to hear that Mrs. Clyde Allen had fallen and broken her arm. We wish her a speedy recovery.

Those shopping at Morgan's store Monday were Mrs. Vena Marks and Roger Paul, Mrs. Hattie Booher, Mrs Velma Wood and Cecil Mitchell.

Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Queen of Cleveland, O., arrived here Wednesday evening to spend the rest of the week with her brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Marks, and his uncle Crosby Queen of Weston.

Mr. and Mrs. Allen B. Starcher were shopping in town Saturday and also visited his daughter, Mrs. Corley Miller and his new grandson at the Boling Clinic.

Mr. and Mrs. Coy Suttles and family were shopping in town, Saturday.

Mr. and Mrs. Henry Marks and Roger Paul and Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Queen were in Arnoldsburg Saturday evening, and also shopping at Roy Morgan's store.

Allen B. Starcher lost a cow Friday night.

Coy Suttles purchased a pig from Henry Marks this week.

Week end guests of Mr. and Mrs. Allen B. Starcher were her son and family, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Wilson of Dunbar and Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Brammer and family, also of Dunbar, Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Wood and family of Worthington, W. Va., and Ray McCoy of Barberton, O.

We had some high water on the right hand fork of Daniels Run, Saturday.

Rev. J.B. Shy of Hamlin held a week's revival at the Stoney Point church last week. He certainly brought some very fine messages. We were sorry to see him leave. The pastor, Rev. Gayle McHenry, held a week's revival this past week, and he also brought some fine messages .

Mrs. Ferris Barr and daughter, Erless, were visiting Mrs. Carrie Reed and family, last Sunday.

Mr. and Mrs. Coy Suttles and family were calling on her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Tanner of Arnoldsburg, last Sunday.

We surely had some high water in this community last Saturday.

Mrs. Leah suttles was visiting Mrs. Henry Marks, Monday.

Sylvia Mitchell was visiting Geraldine Starcher, Tuesday.

Mr. and Mrs. Ferris Barr and daughter, Erless, were Spencer visitors, Tuesday.
