Notes on Charley W. Starcher

Charley W. Starcher was born March 30, 1882, the son of Thomas Jackson and Mary E. Smith Starcher. He married Bessie Workman February 17, 1910. He died December 13, 1942 at the Sweet Springs Sanitarium in Monroe County West Virginia. His wife Bessie Workman Starcher died May 15, 1971 in Barberton, Ohio.

Starcher, burial at Mt Zion Cemetery near Grantsville WV. Of note, the WWI draft registration record to the right gives the name Charlie Winder Starcher, including apparantly his signature.

As the death certificate of Charley Starcher notes, Charley died December 13, 1942 at the Sweet Springs Sanitarium in Monroe County West Virginia. This was a tuberculosis sanitarium operated by the State of West Virginia. The record indicates that Charley had been at that sanatarium for 3 months, 28 days. His cause of death was listed as Chronic Pulmonary Tuberculosis.

The obituary of Bessie Starcher, taken from a newspaper clipping from the Calhoun Chronicle, found in a scrapbook maintained by Viola Starcher Cogar (with some annotations by Viola) is as follows:

Mrs. Bessie Starcher, 82, a native of Calhoun county, died Saturday, May 15, in the Barberton , Ohio, City hospital.

Survivors include one son, Willard, of Norton Ohio; three daughters, Mrs. Mary McCumbers of Rariton, N.J., Mrs. Belma Kelley and Mrs. Belva Pointer of Akron; 20 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Charles and Benjamin Workman of Windham, Ohio; six sisters, Mrs. Ester McCune and Mrs. Ruth Starcher of Barberton, Mrs. Mina Whytsell or Millersburg, Ohio, Mrs. Nellie McCumbers of Windham, Ohio, Mrs. Mrytle Leach of Big Springs, and Mrs. Cleo Rogers of Tanner.

Funeral serices werre held Monday, May 17, in the Canfield-Hickman funeral home in Barberton with the Rev. L.T. Hayes officiating. Additional servises were held Tuesday, May 18, at the Stump funeral home in Grandsville. Burial was in Mt. Zion Cemetery.

This obituary of Mary Starcher McCumbers, daughter of Charley and Bessie Workman Starcher, was taken from a scrapbook of newspaper clippings, kept by Viola Starcher Cogar.

Mary McCumbers, 69, of Frametown, W.Va., died Sunday, June 24, (1982) at home after a short illness.

She was the daughter of the late Charles Starcher and Bessie Workman Starcher. She attended the Beech Grove Baptist Church of Nicut, WV, was a housewife and lived most of her life in Braxton County.

She is survived by 11 sons, Willard McCumbers of Panama City, Fla., William and Willie McCumbers, both of Nicut, Wilburn McCumbers of Akron, Ohio, Clarence McCumbers of Uniontown, Ohio, Donald and Ricky McCumbers, both of Frametown, Gary McCumbers of Ohio, Charles of Wilsie, Roy and Ernest McCumbers, both of Gassaway; one daughter, Betty McCumbers of Duck, W.Va. ; one brother, Willard Starcher of Florida; two sisters, Belva Pointer and Belma Kelley, both of Akron ; 26 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Services were held Wednesday, June 27, in Beech Grove Baptist Church, Nicut, with the Rev. Johnie Alfred officiating. Burial was in the McCumbers family cemetery at N

(08/12/2002) Willie (Dickey) McCumbers, Sr., 60 of Nicut, Braxton County, WV, died August 10 at home following a long illness.

Born in Braxton county, he was a son of the late Noah and Mary Starcher McCumbers. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.

Surviving are a long time companion, Neva Siers of Nicut and a son, Willie McCumbers, Jr. of Fredericksburg, VA; a daughter, Margaret Nicholson of Gassaway, WV; two step-sons, Donnie (Laura) Siers of Front Royal, VA and Ritchie Siers of Rosedale, WV; five grandchildren, Sharon McCumbers of Glenville, WV, Chessie McCumbers of Ravenna, Ohio, Boyd, Jessie and Diane Nicholson of Gassaway; ten brothers, Willard (Betty) McCumbers of Panama City, FL, William (Lois), Garry (Margaret), Paul (Donna), and Donald McCumbers all of Rosedale, WV, Wilber (Peggy) and Roy (Linda) McCumbers of Gassaway, WV, Charles (Loretta) McCumbers of Frametown, WV and Rickey (Marie) McCumbers of Front Royal, Clarence (Eileen) McCumbers of Akron, Ohio; sister, Betty (James) of Manassas, VA.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and sister.

Funeral services will be held, Wednesday, August 14, 2002 at 1 p.m. at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg. Reverend Tom Propst will officiate. Interment will be in the McCumbers Cemetery at Nicut. Friends may call at the funeral home from 11:30 a.m. Wednesday until time of services.
