She married Holly McCoy June 10, 1930 at age 17. Holly McCoy, the son of John and Virginia McCoy, a resident of Calhoun County WV, was 24. An image of their marriage certificate is available AT THIS LINK.

Children of Beulah and Holly are Paula M. McCoy Gainer Roberts, and Holly Ray McCoy.

Beulah Starcher McCoy married Woodrow Carpenter August 12, 1937. Woodrow was noted to be a resident of Ivydale in Clay County WV, born in Gilmer County WV. An image of their marriage certificate is available AT THIS LINK.

Children of Beulah and Woodrow are Floyd Jackson Carpenter and James Woodrow Carpenter II.

Beulah C. Burden, 88 passed away Friday, July 12, 2002, at Minnie Hamilton Health Care Center, Grantsville, West Virginia.

She was born November 29, 1913, the daughter of the late Allen B. and Icie Duvall Starcher.

Surviving is one daughter Paula M. Roberts, of Grantsville; seven grandchildren, Roscoe D. Gainer of Sand Ridge, WV, Jane Collins of Tanner, WV, Stephen D. Gainer of Boston Massachusetts, John Carpenter of Lodi, Ohio, Jan Wallace of Lodi, Linda Gerwig of Medina, Ohio, Randy McCoy of Brunswick Ohio and eight great grandchildren; two sisters, Justine Miller of Spencer, WV and Nina Boatright of Norton, Ohio; three brothers, Richard Starcher of of Concord, North Carolina, Denver Starcher of Middlebourne, WV and Delbert Starcher of Barberton, Ohio.

She was preceded in death by husbands, Holly McCoy, James Woodrow Carpenter and Hays Arnold Burden; three sons, Floyd Jackson Carpenter, James Woodrow Carpenter II, Holly Ray McCoy and a grandson, James Woodrow Carpenter III; brothers, Vere, Allen, Victor and Melvin; sisters, Pauline Starcher and Opal Nitz.

She was a member of the Medina Baptist Temple of Medina, Ohio.

Services were held at Parker Funeral Home of Lodi, Ohio, Tuesday July 16, 2002. Burial was in the Lodi Cemetery, Lodi.

A marriage record AT THIS LINK documents the marriage September 6, 1953 in Calhoun County, West Virginia, of Holly R. (Ray) McCoy to Verla Minney. Holly, the son of Holly McCoy and Beulah Carpenter, born November 6, 1930. Verla, the daughter of Earl and Sylvia Minney, born July 31, 1931. (Ceremony performed by Corley Miller).

A genealogical file compiled by Don Norman, Descendants of Daniel Minney, indicates the children of Holly R. McCoy and Verla Minney McCoy to be Linda Rae, b 2/10/1957, m. Thomas Gehring 7/15/1978; and Mitchell Randy, b. 9/26/1961.

Holly Ray McCoy, 38, of 870 Tanglewood Drive, Medina, Ohio, died Wednesday, January 15, (1969) in Akron City Hospital after a short illness. He had been hospitalized since November 8.

He was a fork lift operator for ten years for the Chevrolet plant at Brook Park. He had lived nine years in Medina, moving there from Elyria. A native of Millstone, he was a veteran of the Korean War.

Surviving are his widow, the former Verla Minney: a daughter, Linda Rae McCoy, and a son, Mitchell Rand McCoy, both at home; his mother, Mrs. Beulah Burden, and step-father, Arnold Burden, West Salem, Ohio: one sister, Mrs. Paula Mae Gainer of Sand Ridge, and a brother, James Carpenter, II, of Lodi Ohio.

Services were held Friday, January 17, at Waite funeral home in Medina, and burial was in the Spring Grove cemetery at Medina.


A marriage record found at the subscription service ancestry.com indicates the marriage August 3, 1950 in Summit County, Ohio, of Paula Mae McCoy, born November 17, 1932, daughter Holly McCoy and Beulah Starcher to Roscoe Dwight Gainer, born October 30, 1927, son of Branford Gainer and Ora Arthur.

Roscoe "Coke" Gainer died November 23, 1973 at at age 46.

Paula Mae "Cookie" remarried afterward to Denver Roberts.





Obituary of son Floyd Jackson Carpenter, found in The Calhoun Chronicle

Floyd (Jack) Carpenter, 16, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Carpenter of West Salem, Ohio, was fatally injured Thursday evening, October 27 (1955), in an auto accident in Medina county, Ohio, on county road No. 28.

Carpenter was a sophomore at the Lodi, Ohio, high school and was a member of the future Farmers of America.

Besides his parents he is survived by one sister, Mrs. Paula Gainer of Staten; two brothers, Holly McCoy of Elyria, O., and Jim Carpenter, at home, his maternal grandfather, Allen Starcher of Millstone and paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. James Carpenter, Clinton, Ohio.

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon from the Parker funeral home in Lodi, with interment following n the Woodlawn cemetery there.

James W. Carpenter, 61, of Lodi, passed away Sunday, Oct. 10, 1999, at the Cleveland Clinic.

He was born April 4, 1938, in Grantsville, W.Va., to James and Beulah Starcher Carpenter and lived in Akron. He moved to Lodi in 1952. Mr. Carpenter was a truck driver for 30 years and was employed by Wooster Motorways, retiring in 1988. He was a member of Lodi United Methodist Church, Harrisville Lodge 137 F&A.M. He was a 32nd degree Mason and member of Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite Valley of Akron and Medina Eagles 2224.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia (nee Allenbaugh); daughter, Mrs. Ray (Jan) Wallace of Lodi; son, John Carpenter of Lodi; grandson, James W. Carpenter IV; mother, Beulah Burden of Grantsville; and sister, Paula Roberts of Grantsville.

He was preceded in death by his father; son, James W. III; and brothers, Jack Carpenter and Ray McCoy.

Service: 11 a.m. Wednesday at Parker & Son Funeral Home, 210 Medina St., Lodi. The Rev. David Howell of Lodi will officiate. Burial: Woodlawn Cemetery, Lodi. Visiting hours: 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, where a Masonic service will be held at 8:45.
Information at findagrave.com indicates that James Woodrow Carpenter died in 1956, and is buried with Beulah Starcher McCoy Carpenter Burden.

An obituary found on the subscription service ancestry.com indicates that James Holly McCoy, the first husband of Beulah Starcher, died November 23, 1966.

James Holly McCoy, 61, of Fleming, Ohio, died on arrival at Marietta Memorial Hospital late Wednesday. He was born Sept. 15, 1905, at Mt. Zion, W.Va., son of the late John McCoy and Mrs. Virginia Riggs McCoy of Mt. Zion, who survives.

Mr. McCoy was a farmer and bus driver for the Warren Twp. Board of Education. He was a member of the Warren Chapel Methodist Church, the Farm Bureau and the W.O.W.

Surviving in addition to his mother are his widow, Mrs. Wano Husk McCoy of Fleming, two grandchildren, five brothers and three sisters, Ernest McCoy, Parkersburg; Howard McCoy, Reedsville, Ohio; Eddie McCoy and Glen McCoy of Mt. Zion; George McCoy of Belpre; Mrs. Thelma Roach and Mrs. Myrtle Weaver of Mt. Zion, and Mrs. Bessie Anderson of Phoenix, Ariz.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Warren Chapel Methodist Church. The Rev. Rudssell Harper will officiate and burial will be in the church cemetery.

Friends may call at the Doudna and McClure Funeral Home in Marietta until 11 a.m. Saturday when the body will be taken to the church.
